Africa Rocks at San Diego Zoo offers 8.5 hectares of impressive African habitats. The animal species live in near-natural environments ranging from rocky coastlines to vast savannahs. The zoo combines species-appropriate husbandry with innovative architecture and gives visitors a unique insight into the African animal world.
A 6,500 square meter X-TEND® stainless steel cable mesh spans the area and follows the natural topography. It extends over eight enclosures housing various African animal species. The minimalist mesh structure with only nine inner pylons allows maximum use of the space and encourages the animals' natural behavior by allowing them to climb under the mesh roof.
The transparent and filigree structure of the X-TEND® mesh gives visitors an uninterrupted view of the enclosures, which intensifies the experience. The mesh panels are connected to each other without visible joints, which emphasizes the aesthetic clarity.
