Project details

Harvard University

The Science and Engineering Complex (SEC), part of the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS), is one of the most energy-efficient research buildings in the world. Designed by Behnisch Architects in Boston, the building is the first at the new university site in the Allston district.

The eight-storey, approximately 50,000 square meter building impresses with its forward-looking architecture. It is divided into three volumes that extend around two light-flooded atriums. These atriums provide fresh air and maximum daylight inside. The lower floors house lecture halls, seminar rooms and teaching laboratories, while the upper levels have 6,400 m² of laboratory space for biology, chemistry, physics and electrical engineering. An additional 2,200 m² is provided for computer laboratories. Green roof terraces and spacious lounge areas connect the rooms and create an open, inspiring environment.

X-TEND® was chosen for the indoor and outdoor railing fillings. Stainless Steel Cable Mesh. With a mesh width of 60 mm and a cable diameter of 2.0 mm, X-TEND® fits seamlessly into the modern design of the SEC, which is characterized by bright surfaces and wooden accents. Around 1,200 m² of X-TEND® meshes were installed and provide safety and transparency as fall protection. Horizontal I-SYS® edge Cable Systems with a diameter of 8 mm and vertical round rods on the railing posts ensure stable fastening.

The X-TEND® stainless steel cable meshes combine high security with minimal weight and an aesthetic appearance. Thanks to their flexible net structure made of robust stainless steel cables, they are versatile in use - both indoors and outdoors. The dimensionally stable, easy-care and low-maintenance construction allows a clear view and underlines the open, innovative design of the SEC.

X-TEND® not only guarantees security, but also complements the architecture in its modern design language. An example of how functionality and aesthetics can work together harmoniously.
