Project details

Neckarsteg Stuttgart

As part of the "Stuttgart 21" project, the Neckar Bridge, built in 1977, had to make way for a modern rail project. After five years in which pedestrians and cyclists had to accept detours, the new Neckar footbridge was completed. The bridge, which runs under the new railroad bridge between Stuttgart's main station and Bad Cannstatt station, serves as an environmentally friendly link between the two parts of the city. With a length of almost 170 meters, a width of 4.5 meters and a height of around 6 meters above the Neckar, the footbridge offers sufficient space for pedestrians and cyclists. According to current plans, the upper level of the railroad bridge will be used by long-distance, regional and suburban trains from the end of 2025.

The railing infill of the Neckarsteg relies on the tried-and-tested X-TEND® stainless steel cable mesh. This solution combines the highest safety standards with a filigree, modern design that blends harmoniously into the architecture of the bridge. A total of almost 400 m² of X-TEND® with a mesh width of 60 mm was installed. The mesh is stabilized by a robust I-SYS® stainless steel cable system with a diameter of 10 mm, which serves as a frame construction. This combination not only ensures the necessary safety, but also allows an unobstructed view of the Neckar and the surrounding area.

The Neckarsteg is a significant step forward for Stuttgart's infrastructure and an enrichment for the city's cycle path network. As an environmentally friendly and functional connection, it contributes to the mobility transition and creates a modern, safe and aesthetic solution for crossing the Neckar.
