Swiss RE, Munich

The Munich headquarters of Swiss Re, one of the world's most successful reinsurance companies, is setting new standards for ecological architecture with a large-scale green facade. The glass and metal façade of the building was supplemented with a green "curtain", which not only provides natural shading but also creates a protected habitat for the local insect world.

The architects Bothe Richter Teherani chose the X-TEND® Stainless Steel Cable Mesh and the I-SYS® Stainless Steel System for the implementation. With a mesh width of 200 mm and a total area of 6,800 m², the mesh not only serves as a climbing aid for plants such as wild vines and wisteria, but also as high-quality fall protection. The planting provides natural shade when the leaves are full and helps to create a pleasant microclimate. The green screen envelops the two-storey building complex and continues into the interior - even in the spacious atrium, nature is harmoniously integrated.

The secure anchoring of the cable systems makes the plants look like trees growing out of the ground. Together with the extensive park and lawn areas, a symbiosis of horizontal and vertical is created that harmonizes the architecture and the surroundings. With its Munich building in Unterföhring, Swiss Re, founded in 1863 and today with an annual turnover of over 37 billion US dollars, shows how modern architecture and sustainability can go hand in hand. In addition to the green façade, the green flat roof is also impressive, underlining the ecological approach of architect Hadi Teherani.
